Menopause

What is menopause?

Menopause is a process women go through as a normal part of aging. It’s triggered by the slowing down in the production of the female sex hormones estrogen and progesterone, which are essential for reproduction.

When a woman reaches early middle age, hormone production starts to slow, a phase called perimenopause. This is the point at which you may begin to experience symptoms. Menopause occurs when you’ve not had a menstrual period for at least 12 months.

What are the symptoms of menopause?

The symptoms women experience vary tremendously. Some women barely notice the change, while others have their lives turned upside down because of their symptoms. The experiences of most women fall somewhere between these two extremes, but as perimenopause and menopause often take around seven years to complete, that represents a considerable reduction in quality of life for many women.

Typical symptoms of menopause include:

  • Hot flashes
  • Night sweats
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Drying and wrinkling of the skin
  • Thinning hair
  • Depression
  • Irritability
  • Mood swings
  • Bouts of crying
  • Loss of libido

Menopause can also lead to other problems such as loss of bone density, resulting in osteoporosis.

What treatments are available for menopause?

If you’re going through menopause, you can help yourself a great deal by leading a healthy lifestyle.

Eating a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables, getting plenty of exercise, finding effective ways to relax, and avoiding activities like smoking or drinking to excess all make a valuable contribution to minimizing the effects of menopausal symptoms.

If you’re struggling with symptoms of menopause, the key treatment is hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Your team at Vitality Center of Charlotte assesses your symptoms and reviews your history to see if you’re a suitable candidate for HRT.

HRT is highly effective in reducing many of the symptoms of menopause, by boosting levels of female sex hormones. Not all women can use HRT, but your expert medical staff can explain any possible risks to you during your consultation.

Alternatively, if you’re only experiencing problems with vaginal dryness, you can use a hormone cream or tablet that raises estrogen levels in the vagina, restoring lubrication and elasticity.
